The Space Between was born as a scholarly society as a result of an October 1997 conference, "Bang, Boom, Bust and Bang (Again): The Space Between: Precursors and Aftermaths, 1914-1945." The international conference was sponsored by the University of Reno and organized by Linda J. Holland-Toll, Roger J. Craik and Rita E. Rippetoe. With the success of the conference, participants were inspired to expand the possibilities for an interdisciplinary discussion of studies in the interwar and wartime period.
